XCR Round 3 - St Annes Winery

As far as the weather was concerned, Round 3 was the opposite to that experienced at Jells Park, with cool conditions and some showers throughout the day. Luckily, however, there had not been too much rain during the week and the course was not soft or slippery and the hills were not too difficult to negotiate. Again, the highlights for the day, were the men’s and women’s premier teams finishing third and fourth respectively and many fine individual results, including our first open women’s podium position with Amy Cashin 3rd. Across the board our numbers were down, so thanks to all those who made the long journey to the venue. Thanks also to the Muscats for bringing the shelter, all those who provide afternoon tea and Alistair McDonald for the photos from day.

Open Women 8km

Our women managed two teams and, importantly, a full Div 2 team. In the context of the competition and many club not fielding full teams we earnt good competition points. It was another solid result for the Premier team with two in the top ten and our first athlete to finish on the podium. Amy Cashin finished in third place, running the 8km in a time of 29 minutes and 28 seconds. And, in another first, Ebony Dodemaide finished in the top ten in an open women’s race in 9th place. Janae Mackrell was third in then Sophie McMinimee and rounding out the team, in her debut in Premier, was Jodie Dunstan. Our Div 2 team picked up valuable points finishing 5th. In the overage results Janice Hodgart was third in the 60+ 5km short course event.

Open Men 8km

As with our women’s teams, our men also suffered from low numbers and, with 3 withdrawals on race day, we were only able to field two full teams and and incomplete Div 3 team. Despite this we had a strong Premier team with Zyad Al Sayd leading the way finishing in 5th overall in a time of 25 minutes and 34 seconds and hot his heels, Liam Cashin in 6th overall. Another solid performance from Brandon Muscat coming in third with Callum Drake in 4th then Nathan Pearce with Thomas Giallo rounding out the team. With the loss of three Div 3 level athletes, the team was well down the order in 11th place. Despite having, and only 3 athletes, the Div 5 fared better in 6th place, due the low numbers in the overall competition.

In the men’s U18 Bon Martin was 9th, Ryder Deans was 5th and a great run from Isaac French finishing 2nd in the Men’s U14. In the Women’s U20s Leanne Ellis was 3rd.
