Princes Park Relays Race Wrap

Division 2 Premiers

After 5 years of growing, retaining and recruiting athletes, we have finally achieved our goal of a premiership in the Open Men’s Div 2 and in XCR 18 the men will join our women in the Premier Division! Congratulations to all those who contributed to this great club milestone, athletes and coaches past and present, this is a major achievement.  It hasn’t been easy, as it should be, we have a great statewide competition with many fine athletes from other clubs and it is great to be part of this now.  I look forward to having many successful years in this division, a few medals and maybe even a premiership one day!

Burnley Half Marathon Race Wrap – XCR Round 9

We were so lucky with the weather on Sunday, given what Melbourne put up during the week.  The conditions were ideal for racing, starting with cool still and sunny conditions and as the race progressed a gentle northerly developed and light cloud cover to filter the sun’s rays.  There were many athletes who took advantage of these conditions, posting some solid times and PBs.  Thanks to our three AV helpers on the day; Liam Cashin, Lori Glover and Caitlin Sneyders.  The overall numbers for round 9 were down however we managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over fielding 4 open teams and 5 junior teams.

Anglesea Ekiden Round 8 Race Wrap

Prem Women

The Anglesea Ekiden Relays was a great hunting ground for Western Aths this round with all junior teams with silver or gold medal performances, the club first XCR Open team XCR medal, another win for the Div 2 open men and some very valuable team points for Men Div 3 and Women Div 4.  We were lucky with the weather, no rain until the drive home!

Wendouree Race Wrap

The highlights from round 7 and the race around Lake Wendouree include three open athletes in the top ten, a club record for Nardine Bainbridge and Ryan Geard in the 15km road race, another big win for Cody Shanahan in the U20 6km race and Alan Hammond’s win in the 60+ age group.  Not to mention the many personal best times in conditions not suited to fast running in the back half of the course due to the high winds.

We had very good numbers amongst the open men and women to field 3 men’s teams and 2 women’s team, just missing out on the Div 4.  Our juniors turned out in good numbers also with teams fielded in mens’ U20, U18 and U16 and in the women’s we had an U18 and u16.  Congratulations to our two age group Champions, U20 Cody Shanahan and Alan Hammond…they can be beaten!
