Steigen Spectacular - Geelong 2017

What a wonderful evening of athletics to complete the 2017 year.  Our club was well represented with 6 athletes competing.

Womens 5km  - Nardine Bainbridge 13th 17:36 and Bri Bunsworth 18:40

Mens 5km - Jack Rayner 1st 13.41

Under 16G 800m -  Mia White 2nd 2.20

Women 400m - Morgan Mitchell  1st 53.76

Mens 100m - Boikai Java 3rd 11.10

Superkick - Harrison White 3rd

Cody - Winner of Under 20 3km at Zatopek

Cody continuing his winning streak.  At the December Zatopek, Cody won the Rob Decastella Under 20 3km title, in a winning time of 8.23mins. This race is considered the top 3km race on the racing calender. Congratulations to both Cody and Burkie

Super Fish - Caitlyn Huell

Caitlyn is the daughter of our member Carolyn.  Caitlyn recently competed at the Pacific School Games Swimming Championships in Adelaide, where she attained a Commonwealth Games Trials qualifying time in the 100m Butterfly.  What a great achievement and all the best for the upcoming trials.

National All Schools- Aliyah Canepa

Aliyah won the under 16 Hammer Throw with a throw 54.42 & Bronze in the Discus with a huge PB and claiming all the Club Records with a throw of 44.65 Open Women Discus record from 1998 broken!

Vic Milers Meet 1 Best Male Performance - Liam Cashin

Liam ripped the track apart in the B 3000m on his way to a 13sec PB. and received AVs nod for Men’s performance of the meet.  Congratulations Liam

Victorian 5km Championships

What a great night.  There were some great runs by the 6 athletes that represented Western Athletics.

Mens D Race: Michael Masseni  16:42 2nd;  Kirk Shanahan 16:50 6th

Womens B Race: Bri Bunworth 17:52 1st; Chelsea Morley 20:54 19th

Mens A Race: Cody Shanahan 14:50 12th; Liam Cashin 14:59 16th

The Fred Lester Scholarship Award - Cody Shanahan

Congratulations to Cody on his Scholarship.

The Fred Lester Distance Running Scholarship Fund offers Training Grants for distance athletes. These events include cross country and road races, as well as track events between 3k and 10k. The aim of the Grants is to financially assist distance runners between the age of 20-30 years. 

AIS under 17 Development Squad

Western Athletics was well represented at the National Under 17 Development Squad in Canberra over the weekend of the 18-19th November. Stu, Kylie and Burkie accompanied Matt Hussey and Jothum Kuku for a very busy weekend of:-                   training sessions;   recovery sessions;    lectures on nutrition; injury, strength and conditioning. 

Congratulations to both Matt and Jothum for being selected to attend the camp, as well as to all coaches.

Siplot Games - Jamieson Battistella and Kelera Ratu

Jamieson and Kelera have been selected as part of a team of 6, from Maribyronong Sports Academy, to attend the 40th annual Simplot Games.  They will be held February 15-17, 2018, at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena, Poctello, Idaho. The J.R. Simplot Company-sponsored event has become one of USAs premier high school indoor track and field events since it was first held in 1979.

There were TEN club records set on the weekend!!! Nine broken at Vic Relays on Sat and then early Sunday morning, Jack Rayner finishing 3rd in the City to Sea 15km road race ran 46.06 to break our Club record by approx 1 minute...
